Market Review | Spring 2017

Todays post is a little restaurant review, and that restaurant, is Market.

No, before some of you start thinking I’m talking about Market Diner where you go at 5am when you’re pissed, I’m not. I’m talking about Market on Western Road, one of my favourite restaurants in Brighton.

I’ve now been twice, and it’s just so bloody perfect.

I literally found it by complete chance; me and my best friend had been to a football match (unlike me, I know) and we wanted to go to SIX across the road for a steak, as they do a great steak. SIX was closed for a private party, and it was pissing down with rain and needed to get in somewhere quickly.

We literally ran across the road in the pouring rain to the first place we saw, which was Market. It was a Saturday night and rammed, but the lovely waitress managed to fit us in downstairs.

Market offers tapas style dishes, Spanish with English influences, and it’s bloody magnificent.

It was one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time, totally spontaneous and by chance, but with lovely wine and the most amazing food, and a great atmosphere to accompany it.

They’ve changed their menu up, so some of the bits we had the first time weren’t available the second time.

Myself and my boyfriend visited not long ago, and experienced an amazing tasting menu, with wine and sherry to accompany each dish.

To start with we had the most delicious Spanish ham soaked in oil, and goats cheese churros with truffle chutney to follow. They are very, very nice, but very, very sickly as they’re so rich and sweet, so you don’t want too many of them.

Next up was the chorizo balls with basil mayonnaise; I love chorizo, basil and mayo so this was a match made in absolute heaven. Broccoli and crispy kale, and then the prawn skewers, were up next, a refreshingly healthy addition to some very rich courses. I surprised myself by actually knowing how to de-shell a prawn.

We finished the main courses with my favourite of them all, lamb with asparagus. It literally was the most tender, fall-off-the-bone lamb I’ve ever had in my life. I’m not usually a lamb fan but this was unreal.

To finish, we had the chocolate, fudge and salted caramel, which is just all the goodness in the world on one plate, and finished me off for the night.

Market is the most unique restaurant I’ve ever visited, with it’s stripped back metal tables and bar seating, and the actual style of food. We sat watching the chefs which was incredible to watch, as they were all so talented!

Honestly, I love this restaurant, and I think I’m going to go back and try their weekend brunch and Sunday lunch menus soon to get a taste for it.
