5 Questions With…Sam Chapman | 2016

Sam Chapman

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well.

I’ve had a few ‘pinch myself’ moments since I started my blog nearly two and a half years ago, but I have to say that this one takes the biscuit.

I attended the Glamour Beauty Festival last weekend, where I attended a talk with Sam Chapman and Nic Haste, otherwise known as Pixiwoo. I have been a massive fan of them for a very long time, so seeing them in the flesh was a very special experience. Then Sam followed me on Twitter, which made me hyperventilate for about an hour.

I decided to send her a message because, why the hell not, miracles happen don’t they? And for once, a miracle did happen for me – Sam replied, and before long, we began chatting, which again, made me nearly go into cardiac arrest. Sparking up a conversation with one of your biggest idols is one thing, but them actually replying and getting into conversation with you is quite another.

I then had the idea of a blog series; 5 Questions With, where I do short, snappy and quick interviews with some of the biggest names in the beauty, fashion, and social media industries. To kick start it, I thought I’d ask the ultra glamorous lady, Sam Chapman, if she would take part. Thinking that a global beauty entrepreneur, makeup artist, and general HUGE name in the beauty industry would probably be way too busy to even consider being involved. But, I was wrong. Sam replied to say she would be totally happy to take part, and again, hyperventilating occurred.

Sam is a seriously down to earth and amazing lady, who’s phone contacts are probably full of household names, and jets off around the world to do things most of us can only dream of. Yet, she agreed to an interview with me – and if that’s not a pinch yourself moment, then I don’t know what is!

So, you’re one of the biggest makeup artists out there. What are your Top 5 Holy Grail Beauty Products?

MAC face & body foundation. An incredibly versatile formulation that can be worn sheer on the face or body or layer for more coverage. YSL Volume Effect Mascara in Radical Noir. Matte, inky, black, voluminous lashes. Lilash Lash Growth Serum – this shizz works. Burts Bees lip balm. Essential for the matte lipstick wearer on lipstick free days. Eucerin Urea Body Moisturiser – gives you skin like Barbie.

How did you get into the industry?

I was always good at art at school but couldn’t find a career path that either interested me or offered financial security. My aunt was one of the top makeup artists at the time and it seemed like a fun and exciting career. I did a two year course in the early 90s and then started assisting her.

What tips would you give to someone trying to crack the social media and beauty industries?

Tips…hmmmm. Be part of the conversation. Find your own voice. Avoid negative people. Try not to please everyone all the time because it makes you bland. Stay honest. Work hard. Only blog if you love it. Don’t compare yourself to others. Only you can be you.

Who are your inspirations?

I have lots. My mum, she instilled such amazing self belief in all of us and I can’t imagine how hard that must have been considering our background with our father. Dom, owner of Gleam Futures and someone I trust completely. His ability to stay calm and level headed when everyone around is losing their shit is the stuff of a legend. He’s one of the kindest, hardest working, honest people I know and I’m so pleased to have him as a friend. He is also a visionary. Nic, she’s a bit of a genius. She has excellent ideas and she is the best judge of character I know.

You created the globally popular Real Techniques brushes. What’s next for them?

I’ve just got off the phone from a two hour Product Development meeting with the team in the U.S. I know exactly what’s next. We’re designed all the way into 2018 – I can’t share any of it though, sorry!

Thank you so much Sam, for giving me your time, and for your amazing answers! I hope you all enjoyed this post. It meant so, so much to me, as someone who is such a huge fan, to look back on a year ago and now see that I am interviewing someone like Sam, it really is incredible.
