Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well.
Today I wanted to share with you all my tips and tricks for getting ready for a night out, birthday, special occasion etc, including products to use, my advice for keeping your curls in, where to go for makeup/hair if you want it done professionally; everything. I had been planning on doing a post about my birthday that’s just been and my whole ‘getting ready routine’ but so many of you have requested little tips and tricks, and asked what the best primers are and fake eyelashes and the best hairdressers in Brighton and all that jazz so I thought I’d stick it all in a post for you. It’s going to be a lengthy old post so get comfortable and don’t expect to be moving for a while!
So, you want long lasting, flawless makeup? Well, to start with, you need a primer.
I’m really enjoying the Becca Backlight Priming Filter at the moment; it gives a really lovely glow to the face, makes my foundation look a whole lot better, and it keeps my makeup on just as well as your favourite primer. The consistency of it and the pearls and soft focus Silica it contains means it really does blur your imperfections. You can grab it here.
To finish your makeup off, and to 100% lock it in place, a setting spray is always a good idea. Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is the greatest gift to Earth; it’s seriously fucking amazing. I haven’t been without it for years now; you just hold it away from your face, and spritz it all over when your makeup is finished, and it won’t budge all night, seriously. Your face will feel pretty wet at first but just bear with and give it a minute to dry, and it looks even more flawless than before. You can get it for yourself here.
For a good long lasting lippie on a night out, that won’t smudge everywhere when you’re doing jaegerbombs or snogging strangers, I’d go for the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipsticks here (Red Carpet Red is the most beautiful red shade for a night out), or the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks here. I wanted to share a liquid lippy and a normal bullet oil-based one, as I know everyone likes different things. I personally like both, however have found bog standard ones staying power is never as good as liquid lipsticks; however the Charlotte Tilbury ones definitely are. I’m really surprised to be honest, as I find when I’m drinking on a night out (which I am, constantly) I end up with a patch in the middle and the lipstick just remaining around the edge. However the Charlotte Tilbs one is really bloody good, and stays put, and the colours are so pigmented and beautiful.
Kat Von D liquid lippies are also great; my best friend recently went to America and brought me one back and I absolutely adore it, such good staying power, so smooth and non-drying, just fucking great. Love love love. Oh and the colours are beaut. SO MANY NUDES.
For eyes, I have had a million eyeshadow palettes that are shit and don’t last; I’ve got home in the early hours and my eye makeup is nowhere to be seen. The Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette has changed my life irrevocably forever. SO pigmented, smells like peaches, colour range is gorgeous; it’s just amazing and they honestly last on your eyes all day. Get it here and if I ever make you a promise, it’s 100% true, and I promise you that you won’t regret it. It’s so pigmented you barely need to use any product so it’ll last bloody ages too.
I physically cannot go on a night out without fake eyelashes on; I have a serious problem with it. I don’t know why, or what weird no-fake-eyelashes-on-a-night-out traumatic experience I had in a past life, but I just can’t do it. It does my friends heads in, because if we are out and want to spontaneously go out I’m like ‘Well, we can if you can find me a pair of Eyelure’s somewhere’ and my boyfriend because every Saturday and Sunday morning there are lashes all over the carpet.
My all time faves are the Ardell Demi Wispies; they’re so reasonably priced, they look like your own lashes but ten times better, and they’re such a good price, so it doesn’t matter as much if you just discard them on your carpet at 4am and then tread them in the next morning when you’re hungover, and a week later think it’s a colony of spiders. You can get them here.
Also, the House of Lashes Iconic Lashes are a beauty guru and YouTuber favourite; they’re glamorous and dramatic and look amazing with heavy eye makeup and a nude lip. Available here.
I don’t just tan for nights out, I am constantly caked in fake tan, but I usually double up and add a little glow for a night out. I love my trusty St Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse I’ve used it on and off for years; I always end up leaving it to try something else even though it’s amazing, and coming back to it. It goes a lovely bronzed colour, and it doesn’t just totally fade after one shower, it lasts a good 3/4 days. You can get it here – and I’ve also just started using the St Tropez Instant Tan Gloss, which just adds a lovely, glossy finish to the legs. I add it down the centre of my legs so that I look 1% like a Victoria’s Secret Model – you can buy it here (a very good price too!).
If you are doing your tan yourself, my biggest tip for a flawless looking tan is to exfoliate and shave the night before and coat yourself in body butter/moisturiser, and then the next day fake tan. It always looks so much better than if I shave and tan on the same day/night.
For my birthday not long ago, I did get a spray tan at The Lanes Health & Beauty which is my favourite place in Brighton to get a spray tan. I always use St Tropez, well usually, in my day to day life, which my skin is basically permanently stained with, and The Lanes Health & Beauty use for their spray tans, so I find it useful to go to them, not just for location and because their spray tans are bloody good, but because I’ll have the same tan on my skin. Have a look at their website here.
If you’re doing your hair at home, then make sure it’s at least 1 or 2 day old hair. If your hair is freshly washed, it will never stay in place if you’re styling it as it’ll be too clean and limp. If you have happened to of washed it the same day, you can use trusty Batiste Dry Shampoo, to give it a bit of texture and dryness, and make it better for styling. You don’t need me to link that, you know you can grab it in any supermarket, Superdrug or Boots! A more expensive option, but so bloody gooooood and it lasts forever (I’ve had my bottle for well over a year), is the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Okay, it’s not cheap by any means, but it’s high end, good quality, the bottle is absolutely massive, and it works. It gives your hair such a natural lift, just spray it on your scalp from a distance, or wherever you need a lift, and buff it in with your hands just like you would dry shampoo, and you’ve got so much volume. BOOOM. You can get the full sized bottle here or the travel sized bottle if you want to try it first, or want a small one to take on holiday, here.
If you wanna get your hair styled by a professional, I couldn’t recommend Trevor Sorbie in Brighton enough.
As I said, it was my birthday not long ago and I got my hair done there for it. The lady who did my hair was so talented, I wanted some glamorous Hollywood type curls on one side. I’d stupidly washed my hair that morning too as I’d needed to wash my spray tan off, but she put some mousse and other products in it to ‘dirty it up’ a bit and make it hold.
I have a bit of a bad experience with hairdressers usually, I don’t usually end up getting the style that I want, however it was exactly how I wanted. It looked so glamorous and amazing, and she clipped it subtly at the bottom so that it stayed all on one side. My hair did not move all night, it stayed looking so, so good and because she had blowdried and also pin curled it before letting the curls out, it lasted for the next few days so I didn’t even have to style my hair for another 2 days or so.
They also have a larger downstairs area which was good as upstairs can be quite busy on a Saturday with everyone getting their hair done for the weekend, and it was just me and another lady down there, and seeing as I looked an absolute state as I had the darkest, spray tanned face with no makeup, and a stained black t-shirt because I’d just dropped my smoothie and sausage bap from Costa next door all down me, I was glad to be hidden away down there! It’s really well lit too, which isn’t good when you looked as gross as I did, but is good for being able to actually see your hair!
I only got my hair styled there but I’m going to book in to get it coloured and cut and get another pin curl/blow dry situation as I was so impressed it was ridiculous, and all the staff were amazing. Having my hair look so nice honestly made my birthday, as I’m good with makeup but not so much with fair, so thank you so much Trevor Sorbie for making my barnett look ahhhhhmazing.
You can book online at Trevor Sorbie here.
I now tend to get gel nails done, because I got acrylics done for years and they just fucked my nails up so badly and I’m still paying the price for it. However, if I don’t have time to get them done, then I obviously paint them myself as I cannot go out without my nails painted, mainly because years of painting them have left them pretty stained under the surface!
I found that all my nail varnish used to chip off within hours previously, but I’m really enjoying the Revlon ColorStay Gel Envy Diamond Top Coat which you can get here because it’s the first top coat I’ve discovered that’s made my nail varnish not chip off, and look nice and glossy, and actually replicate the salon gel nail look!
Again, The Lanes Health & Beauty is great for nails, however for my birthday I tried a place at the top of Preston Street called Brighton Nails I think, it’s opposite Sainsburys, and they did a really good and long lasting job so I was really impressed and will definitely go there again.
So, I hope you enjoyed this post, and found everything useful! Let me know what your favourite products are for a night out, and what salons you like visiting by tweeting me @btongirlprobs.
All my love BGP xx
