Dinner At The Ivy In The Lanes | 2018

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well.

SO. Food. Let’s talk about it; I love food, as we are all well aware because I snort ribeye and garlic bread every 0.6 seconds, so I was not just over the moon, but doing backflips across the Solar System, when it was brought to my attention that The Ivy was coming to Brighton.

I’d been for breakfast a few times (read my breakfast review here) and loved it more than I will love my first born, so dinner was on the agenda next.

As I said, our meal and drinks were free, but I am under no obligation to say anything nice whatsoever, whenever I do a review I am simply honest, and I can honestly say that The Ivy is incredible.

We had the Queen Bee cocktail which The Ivy have launched as they are taking part in Snailspace in Brighton & Hove this year. A fantastic local artist has designed their snail with artwork inspired by bee friendly plants – hence the cocktail name, which is a bespoke honey cocktail.

Now, when I heard the description of the cocktail, which is Warner Edwards Honeybee gin, apricot brandy, lemon juice and Fever-Tree lemonade I was unsure how my tastebuds – used to sweet and fruity cocktails only – would take it. Oh. My. Word. If I could drink one cocktail for the rest of my life, it would be this. Me and my friend have about 18 conversations about it daily.

If I had to describe it, I’d say it was the most refreshing lemonade with hints of honey that I’ve ever tasted – cool, cold, and what you would dream about drinking on a hot day on the beach. I am obsessed. The Ivy, if you’re listening…please make this a permanent cocktail!

For starters, we had Prawn Cocktail; now, I love a Prawn Cocktail, it’s my go-to starter in general life (and no, I know what you’re thinking, it’s not just because it has the word ‘cocktail’ in it), because I hate paté, I don’t trust soups that often, and anything with the word ‘liver’ in gives me a full body shiver, so generally, I like to opt for a good old fashioned PC. Some places get it very wrong, and others, like my mum and The Ivy, get it very, very right.

Baby gem, avocado, Marie Rose sauce, cherry tomatoes, and the all important prawns. I have never tasted prawns like this. In fact, I didn’t even know prawns like this existed. In my small realm of life, which let’s be honest, is at an absolute push a £2.99 pack of King Prawns in Sainsbury’s, they certainly don’t anyway.

These were so big and juicy, I’ve been dreaming about them for the last week.

Genuinely the best lamb I’ve ever eaten in my life, the Slow-Cooked Lamb Shoulder did not disappoint. With a herb crust, creamed potato, carrots, swede and a rosemary sauce, it’s the kind of meal I don’t normally consume until October hits (I live on a BBQ and wine diet until September), and it’s now one I feel genuinely sad that I am not eating every single night.

The lamb was so tender and soft, and packed full of flavor; the creamed potato was buttery, and the sauce was the perfect accompaniment. I can literally not fault the dish in one single way.

Sadly I cannot post video content on my blog, but you’ve probably seen this all over the Gram, the Chocolate Bombe is a melting chocolate bombe with a vanilla ice cream and honeycomb centre, with hot salted caramel sauce that gets poured over it leaving it to melt. A Boomerang lovers dream.

Again, I was rendered speechless. How do you fault a chocolate lovers fantasy, something so sweet, creamy and delicious, something I will now search for on every restaurant dessert menu for the rest of my days and be left heartbroken that it’s not there…if anything, The Ivy has left me with such a high standard for every other dining experience in the future, that I’m not sure anything will ever match it.

The restaurant is gorgeous, the staff are attentive and lovely, the food is off the charts…the entire experience is genuinely something special and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Let me know if you go and what you think!

Speak soon.

All my love BGP xx
