Best In Sussex | Afternoon Tea Edition | South Lodge Hotel, Horsham

*Afternoon Tea paid for myself and not gifted*

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well.

It’s the next post in my Best In Sussex blog series, where I’m going round Sussex, reviewing 10 different places for each different cuisine there is, and crowning a winner for each section. The first section I’m covering is Afternoon Tea, and you can catch my previous reviews here, here, here, here and here.

South Lodge Hotel was probably one of the most recommended places to me for Afternoon Tea, so I knew I had to go and review them.

The Chocolate & Passionfruit Cake, and the Lemon Tart were some of the best cakes I have ever eaten; the flavours were unbelievable, they were so fresh and crisp, bursting with just the right amount of fruit, and not overpowering. I have to say, the Cake section of an Afternoon Tea is never my favourite; a lot of places fall down in this area, and I much prefer the Savouries and the Scones, but South Lodge absolutely smashed this tier out the park. I’ve never been the biggest Macaroon fan, but as far as they go this one was lovely. The Cream Bun you see on your right with the pink topping, I’ve tried to remember what exactly this was but I can’t, however it had the most interesting flavours, and was almost like a mini doughnut with a doughy, sweet filling.

The scones were lovely; warm, fresh, soft in the middle and crisp on the outside. The choice of toppings was great; Blackberry Jam is probably my new favourite thing, and the Strawberry Jam was one of the best I’ve ever had.

Now…the most important part. The Savouries.

To begin with, the sandwiches and scones can be replenished as many times as you want. I have never experienced this in any Afternoon Tea before, which scored them immediate points for me.

We didn’t replenish our scones, but our sandwiches…I think we must’ve had about 4 rounds.

Before I digress, I’ll just discuss the middle section with you quickly; the Sausage Roll was lovely. Warm, crispy, so full of flavour and you could tell it had just been baked. The mini flatbread/Mushroom & Egg on Toast…this was just the perfect addition, it was like nothing I’ve ever had in an Afternoon Tea before and to be honest, I could’ve eaten about 10.

Now…the sandwiches. Oh wow.

The Egg Roll with Burnt Onion Powder was just unbelievable. I do not like Egg Mayonnaise, and I will rarely eat it in an Afternoon Tea. As this looked slightly different, I thought I’d give it a go and wow…no wonder we kept ordering more! Soft, fluffy rolls, beautifully flavoured eggs with the addition of the Burnt Onion Powder; I could not fault it. The Ham Sandwich was absolute perfect, with a dressing that just completely transformed it from your standard Ham Sandwich in an Afternoon Tea. This was another one that got reordered time and time again.

As you all know, I’m not typically a Smoked Salmon fan so I gave these a miss, although my friend loved them; when we replenished our sandwiches, they also brought out Cream Cheese & Cucumber which was lovely but my least favourite of the Egg and Ham.

All in all…wow. What an Afternoon Tea. My absolute favourite that I’ve had ever, the hotel itself is beautiful, the grounds are amazing, the room in which it’s held is lovely, the staff were friendly, the food was of the highest quality and the fact you can get your sandwiches and scones replenished just really adds to it and means you certainly get your moneys worth.
