Deans Place Hotel, Alfriston Review | 2019

*Our stay, dinner and drinks were complimentary in return for an honest review, and the items in the room were gifts*

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well.

Last Sunday, myself and my boyfriend went and stayed at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston after we were kindly invited to stay and have dinner and cocktails. One of the many perks of having my blog, is of course being invited to lovely places for free to review them, but please believe me when I say that I am never under any obligation to say positive things about a meal, hotel or product; all my reviews are honest, because I don’t want any of you to ever waste your money on something that isn’t worth it.

I love staying at places in Sussex; I know it’s not exactly a trip to Bali, but when you get used to the monotony of everyday life, the big shop at Lidl, wet towels on the bed and washing up woks full of stuck-on rice that won’t come off for love nor money, it’s nice to just get away for a night and escape your day to day routine.

So, that’s what we did. I’ve only ever been to Deans Place once before, and that was a wedding reception a few years ago. It was dark and I’d had a fair few wines so I could barely remember anything about the place, so was excited to come back in daylight, and sober.

I was so pleasantly surprised by our room; I knew the hotel had more of a classic feel to it, and wasn’t necessarily going to be like the glass front overly-modern new builds popping up everywhere, but you know what, I actually prefer a more classic style.

As you can see, we had two large windows in our room, both with amazing views. I will always pay extra for a good view in hotels if I can, as it really makes a room I feel like.

The bathroom was so modern and sleek in contrast, but I love that style of bathroom as it just looks a lot cleaner. I really liked the large wet-room style shower. Also, there were large size toiletries, rather than the teeny little miniatures they normally give you!

We then headed downstairs to sit by the pool and have a couple of drinks as the dinner was bloody unreal that day.

Fortunately for us, the pool was so quiet so we had it to ourselves; it was so sunny that the water wasn’t cold at all, and to be honest if I could spend every Sunday drinking prosecco in the sweltering heat by a swimming pool, that would be fandabbydozey.

We then went upstairs to get ready for dinner.

I became a stresshead because a half an hour power nap ended up turning into a near-on 3 hour one, and I awoke not knowing what day/year/galaxy I happened to be in, and realising I had a mere half an hour to get ready for the evening. Cue me growling ‘GET IN THE SHOWER FOR GOD SAKE, WE HAVEN’T GOT ALL DAY’ to my boyfriend, whilst I was still only applying face serum.

The lovely manager made us some cocktails; for my boyfriend, a dark rum based one on the left, and a sloe gin based one for me on the right.

I love having a few cocktails when staying at a hotel, as you’re not driving, you can walk straight upstairs to your room, and the atmosphere is normally really nice, as you’re chilled out and relaxed, and that was exactly how I felt on Sunday night at Deans Place. Obviously, mixing your drinks between prosecco, wine and gin always helps you to relax a tad, especially when you’re a highly strung mess like me, it generally takes a concoction of alcohol to chill you out.

For dinner, we both opted for the Soup Of The Day with Garlic Croutons to start (we also had some freshly baked bread on the table which was amazing); it was butternut squash and so good. Probably not the most Summery option to go for it, but I am a big soup fan, and I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to starters.

I went for the Pork – pan fried Blyth Burgh free range pork cutlet, potato and celeriac puree, compressed apple and pan juices. I don’t really like apple in savoury dishes (I know, I know – I ordered pork what did I expect) so I steered clear of that, but the rest was seriously good. The pork belly was one of the best I’ve had.

My boyfriend, always one to be really daring and step outside his comfort zone…not, went for the steak, of course. 60z Bexhill Holmes Farm beef fillet, seared plum tomato, Portobello mushroom, thick cut chips, and béarnaise sauce. He loved it, and I tried a piece of his steak and it was cooked perfectly.

You all know that I’m never one to step away from my beloved Sticky Toffee Pudding, and if there’s anything on a menu even slightly resembling it, even if it’s a distant cousin, I’ll be ordering it for dessert. We both ordered the Date Pudding – sticky date pudding, Sussex honeycomb ice cream, salted caramel sauce, and wow it was good.

We were both certifiably stuffed after 3 courses, and went up to bed, which was seriously comfortable.

Waking up there in the morning with the beautiful views was an absolutely perfect way to start a Monday morning – a far cry from my usual Monday mornings staggering out of bed and sitting at the dining room table with my laptop in my pyjamas eating a chocolate muffin for breakfast at 8am.

We headed down to breakfast, which did not let the brilliant dinner from the night before down in the slightest.

There was a Continental Table with all the usual bits and pieces – pastries, cereal, oats etc, and also the option of ordering hot food.

I opted for scrambled eggs on toast as usual, my favourite breakfast, and my boyfriend went for the fry up, also as usual. What can I say, we are creatures of habit!

My scrambled eggs were lovely – I’ve never thought to add chives on top, so this is a definite new must-have topping for me of a morning.

My boyfriend, as usual, loved his fry up – I don’t know why but I’m just not a fry up fan these days! Think I had too many when I was hungover 6 days a week when I was 18, and I just can’t stomach them anymore!

After breakfast, we went upstairs and got our things together and checked out, which I was very sad about.

I absolutely loved our stay at Deans Place Hotel. It’s not somewhere I would’ve necessarily thought to stay, but we had such a chilled, lovely break away, and I loved every minute of it – especially on a warm Summers day like we had!
